Both on and off stage, soprano NOELLE SLANEY is unapologetically herself.  Being a born and bred Newfoundlander, music has always been an inherent part of her life and though she now resides in Toronto where “the buildings reach the clouds,” she continues to be an active performer of opera and concert repertoire and strives to challenge the way people think about the world in every performance.  Praised for her “lovely, rich tone” and “enviable coloratura”, Noelle was one of eight finalists in the Canadian Opera Company Centre Stage Competition in 2018, and was awarded second place in the vocal category of the Federation of Music Festivals’ National Competition in 2016.  She holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in vocal performance from Memorial University of Newfoundland and a Master’s degree in opera performance from the University of Toronto.

Some favourite highlights of Noelle’s include Laurie Moss in “The Tender Land“ and Mme. Silberklang in “Der Schauspieldirektor” (University of Toronto Opera), Carlotta in the Atlantic Canadian debut of “Phantom of the Opera” (Opera on the Avalon), Monica in “The Medium” (Memorial University of Newfoundland Opera) and Cunegonde in “Candide” (Memorial University Wind Ensemble).  A lover of contemporary music projects, she has added her voice to performances of excerpts of R. Murray Schafer’s “Wolf Music” and “Patria IV” (Octatonic Decadence), Escape Room and Disobedience (University of Toronto Opera Student Composer Collective), “A Window to a Dream: beloved operatic arias and choruses performed for the first time in Farsi” (Cultural Interchange – 360), and Songbook XII (Tapestry Opera).

Noelle is a portfolio artist and works to engage with her voice and western art music beyond traditional constructs.  She has begun to explore musical theatre and contemporary commercial genres and has most recently begun stretching her legs as a composer by creating arrangements of her favourite Joni Mitchell and Tim Baker songs, two artists who are influencing Noelle’s voice as a writer and performer.  Compelling, relevant storytelling is something that is important to Noelle and this has led her to create recital programs centred around domestic violence, mental health, and gender expression.

When she isn’t lending her voice to creative projects, Noelle can be found in her natural habitat at the gym.  She has been an avid powerbuilder for the past 8 years and credits the sport with helping her develop the physical awareness and mental fortitude that has strengthened (pun intended) her understanding of vocal function as well as her relationship with her own voice.  Noelle’s athleticism is a quality she values as a unique part of her artistry and is something she looks forward to exploring academically in the coming years.
